Transforming Northern Uganda Through Women-Led Sugarcane Production

We have built the Atiak sugar factory in Northern Uganda as an engine for development to support the livelihoods of vulnerable populations, particularly women. Communities own the land and harvest the sugarcane. We, in turn, provide seeds, oversee planting, process the sugarcane, and purchase it from the farmers. The factory will support 14,000 farmers and factory workers once at full capacity.

Communities control millions of additional acres and will be able to use revenue from the Atiak Sugar Project to di- versify their crops and expand cultivation. In the sub region, there are around 200 acres of cultivatable land for each person. One local community of 5,000 people alone has 3.2 million acres, underscoring the scale of opportunity for building off our current project.

AMINA HERSI MOGHE

Amina has provided employment directly and indirectly to over 6,000 people, mostly women, through her businesses. In all of her investments, she ensures women are given equal opportunities and that they play an integral role in management.

Supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The program is located in a previously war-affected area of Atiak in Amuru and supports employment and community-owned land-use. We have built basic infrastructure and are helping transition communities from subsidence to commercial farming. We work closely with the United Nations, and the program support multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals.
